Incident at Sydney jail, tear gas deployed and impacting nearby residents

An incident is unfolding at a prison in Sydney’s southeastern suburbs, with riot officers deploying a large amount of tear gas and locking down the centre.

Live vision of Long Bay Correctional Facility shows prisoners laying on the ground handcuffed and heavily armed guards patrolling the yard.

It’s believed a significant amount of tear gas was fired during the incident.

Residents nearby in the suburb of Malabar have complained of burning eyes, noses and throats as a result of the gas wafting from the prison and into their homes.

A helicopter is flying overhead and the prison is now in lockdown.

ABC News reports that one prisoner has been led away by officers. It reports that the incident was sparked by a fight between inmates.

NSW Corrective Services has been contacted for comment.
