Sixth person charged with murder over death of Vergel Velasquez in Sydney

A woman has been arrested in Sydney over the mysterious death of Sydney father Vergel Velasquez.

On December 30 last year, authorities were called to the property on Mia Mia St, Girraween, in Sydney’s west, after reports a group of people had been “involved in a physical altercation”.

Mr Velasquez, 42, was found unconscious by police in the stairwell of his unit complex having suffered severe head injuries. He was treated at the scene before being rushed to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition, where he died from his injuries the following day, on New Year’s Eve.

It’s believed he was beaten to death but the motive remains unclear.

A 35-year-old woman is the sixth person to be charged with murder as part of an ongoing investigation into Mr Velasquez’s death.

The woman, from Guilford, was arrested at a unit in Kingsford on Tuesday before being taken to Maroubra Police Station where she was charged.

As part of ongoing inquiries, officers searched properties in Granville and Moree earlier this year where authorities seized a white Holden station wagon believed to be used by the alleged attackers to flee the scene.

In May Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty described Mr Velasquez’s death as “horrendous”, after releasing CCTV footage in the hope members of the public could help with investigation.

“Mr Velasquez was an innocent victim in this attack – he was left with injuries so severe that he sadly lost his life 24 hours later, on what should have been a day of celebration being New Year’s Eve … for the family it’s a day of tragedy,” he said.

“It’s clear, he was a nonviolent person, he wouldn’t harm anyone. For this to happen for six men to attack and kill him, I don’t think the community can stand this.”

On Monday a 39-year-old man was arrested in Lidcombe and charged with murder. He will appear in Parramatta Local Court today.

Another four men, aged 41, 42, 49 and 50, have also been charged and remain before the courts.

The woman was refused bail and will appear in Waverley Local Court today.
